Heavier Penalties Sought For Damaging Coral Reefs

The State Government should consider increasing fines or even prison terms for those found guilty of damaging coral reefs, which are natural treasures for Sabah.

Nominated Assemblywoman Datuk Amisah Yassin said the State Government, through its relevant authorities, needs to implement a new and more effective approach to look after and deal with the destruction of coral reefs in Sabah waters.

This is because, she said, coral reefs are one of Sabah’s tourism attractions with stunning natural marine beauty, which is one of the world’s best natural treasures.

However, she said these treasures are increasingly threatened by illegal and irresponsible activities, such as fish bombing, the presence of ships and uncontrolled development.
